PROJECTS FOR SCHOOLS
My name is Mark Gilchrist, and I am one of four U.S. Peace Corps volunteers serving in Riscani, Moldova.
I know of several programs, projects and competitions that may be available to your students, and would love to help you and your school benefit from them. I have detailed 11 opportunities. See Below. Opportunities include:

Diamond Challenge
An international contest of ideas for small businesses or community projects
Time: Several months, from the fall through spring. (Deadline for community projects is November.)
Scope: Students will create and develop an idea for a small business or community project and will present it to judges, first in a simple video, and if they win, in person. Usually, teams of 3 - 6 participate. No business experience is needed as they follow a printed curriculum.
Language: At least one student should speak English
Incentives: Cash amounts at national level and at final competition in the U.S. Travel money for winning Moldovan team to travel to the U.S.

S.U.A. / Moldova classroom pairing
Help your students and teachers interact with students and teachers in the United States of America.
Time: Throughout the school year
Scope: Interact with teachers and students in the S.U.A. in ways you choose. Enjoy prepared curricula and lesson plans.
Language: English
Incentives: Your students and teachers will benefit from sharing their culture and learning about other cultures.

Hour of Code
Give your students a chance to see if they like computer programming.
Time: One hour, any time, but best during early December each year
Scope: Program is completely online and at each student's pace. Hold this event for one student or dozens, during classes or after school. Each student, or group, can select online modules that challenge them.
Language: English, Romanian and others
Incentives: Exposure to growing industry offering exciting careers

CodeGirl
This inspiring movie will encourage girls to learn technology
Time: 2 hours, anytime, but best in early November, 2015
Scope: Can hold a small viewing of movie with a digital projector or just on a few monitors. Can hold a discussion period afterward. Girls can also watch movie anytime, on YouTube (after early Nov. 2015 release.)

Darien Book Aid Plan
Free books for your school or library
Time: Anytime
Scope: U.S. organization will ship 12 Kilograms of books to you for free. We will tell them the age and reading level of your students, and may ask for particular themes, and they will select and ship the books.

Incentives: Give your students more books to read.

World Map Project
Students paint a large map of the world on a wall in your school
Time: Several hours, anytime
Scope: Students decide on map style, colors and design, and copy it to a wall.
Language: Any
Incentives: Create a beautiful map that will be enjoyed by students for decades!

English Club
Students meet once a week (or so) and speak English, talk about English, and talk about life. Could have some structured exercizes, or not
Time: 1 hour a week, or whatever students want.
Scope: Could be year-round, with maybe breaks in the summer and holidays.
Language: Some English required
Incentives: Become more comfortable speaking a language that is widely spoken in North America and parts of Europe.
